Students contribute to the restoration of the Delta

Shin-Kee-Curriculum-trial-082109-019Over 40 students from Stockton’s Kohl Open Elementary School participated in a hands-on restoration project at the Shin Kee marsh just south of Highway 12 and Guard Road on the eastern edge of the California Delta. Led by a team of biologists from Zentner and Zentner and volunteers from The Restoration Trust the students removed trash and planted over 400 native sedges and grasses. New channels and peninsulas were recently constructed to enhance habitat for the Giant Garter Snake, a federally-listed reptile. The students focused plantings along these habitats and also learned about wetland ecosystems and native plants and wildlife.
